Reading Road closure update

posted 8 Aug 2011, 08:05 by Blackwater & Hawley NHW
South East Water is reminding motorists that Reading Road, Frogmore is closed to through traffic and the diversion route must be followed.  South East Water closed Reading Road between the A30 roundabout and Darby Green Road on Monday 25th July 2011 to begin work to improve the region’s water supply.
The road closure is necessary due to the size of machinery and equipment required to install this new water main which has a diameter of 24 inches (609mm).

Graham Webb, South East Water Delivery Manager, said: “Since the road closure came into force some lorries and motorists have been ignoring the signs, forcing their way through the closure and travelling along Reading Road at considerable speed.
“This not only puts the lives of our contractors working in the road at risk, but also other motorists and pedestrians too.”
The water company has agreed with Hampshire Highways to enforce the road closure by using solid barriers at one end (close to A30 Roundabout) and also completely blocking the access from Frogmore Road and Frogmore Park Drive into Reading Road.  As a result those residents who live in Reading Road and those cul-de-sacs off it will only be able to enter and exit from the Derby Green Road end of Reading Road.  Graham Webb continued: “This closure means the residents in the surrounding areas will have to follow the diversion route as agreed with Hampshire Highways to access their properties.  “We anticipate that this arrangement will be required until the work in Reading Road between A30 and Green lane is complete.  “I fully appreciate this may inconvenience residents, particularly those who live towards the A30 Roundabout end of Reading Road, however it is necessary to ensure safety along the road while the work is undertaken.  “I apologise for the disruption this work is causing and we will endeavour to complete the scheme as quickly as possible to minimise the impact on the local community.”
